Our History
In 1918 a young man called Harry John Ricketts returned home after serving in the First World War. He took out tenancy on a small holding in Erdington, it was here that he bought his first ever horse and cart and started delivering sand and gravel to the general public. Also on the land alongside the builders yard, were poultry and  a 70 sow pig unit, which were reared, and vegetables grown for selling. Over the years as Harry’s company got more successful, the horse and cart soon turned into a small fleet of lorries and the land was a thriving builders yard where Harry’s two sons, Ken and Dave worked.

In 1964 the tenancy and the land was lost and the company H Ricketts was sold. Dave who is the youngest of the 2 sons was given one very old lorry and along with his father’s companies good will, H D Ricketts Ltd was born and the business was moved to Wood End Lane in Erdington. Over the coming years the business developed more and more and Dave was able to purchase some more, newer lorries. Following the growth of the company, Dave decided to move his fleet and office to Summer Road in Erdington, where up until 2015 the headquarters stood solid for almost 50 years, only very recently to be moved to Weeford quarry which is fully operational. The company is now run by Dave’s three children, Adrian, Tony and Ruth.

Today H D Ricketts is one of the largest hauliers and suppliers of sand and gravel in the West Midlands, with a strong fleet of 33 tippers providing some of the United Kingdom’s biggest builders merchants along the way. Accompanying the tippers is a fully robotic and automated bagging plant in Rugeley and the most recent addition, a 300-acre quarry, which is situated in Weeford, Sutton Coldfield.

However, after recently celebrating 50 years of business, H D Ricketts Ltd still remains a small family run business and a very close-knit company.
